Project EDDIE and Macrosystems EDDIE

A distinct category, and worth understanding as one. These are short data modules, one lab period to one week, not term projects. They are built on an A-B-C fading-scaffold structure and the 5E learning cycle: engagement, exploration, explanation, expansion, evaluation. Part A is heavily guided, part C is close to open-ended.

They are the most directly relevant published, assessed analogue to the analytical spine of this project’s four stages. The difference to keep in mind: EDDIE modules are individual-to-small-group short exercises, and EESC 301 is a twelve-week gated team project. The analytical moves are the same; the scale and the negotiation are not.

The limnology modules that matter here

  • Lake MixingStart here for Stage 1

    Identify the thermocline and the mixing regime from a temperature profile. Pairs with Lab 4, and it is the right place to start before you open L2, L10 or L17.

  • Stream DischargeStart here for Stage 2

    Read a hydrograph from real-time USGS data: change in discharge over time, flood frequency, and the effect of urbanisation and flood control. Pairs with Lab 7, and comes before L6.

  • Production and respiration from high-frequency dissolved oxygen. The method behind the oxygen half of the oxythermal squeeze.

  • Long-term ice-off records and linear regression to predict future ice-off. The clearest worked example of pulling a trend out of a long, messy environmental record.

  • Loading and its consequences. Part 3 of the sequence that starts with Stream Discharge.

Macrosystems EDDIE

The climate and lake-temperature modules, which run the General Lake Model in R against public NEON, GLEON and LTER data. If you want to see what it looks like to drive a real lake model with real forcing data, this is the published teaching version of it.

This kind of teaching is documented, not improvised. North Temperate Lakes LTER data reach roughly 1,200 students a year, including undergraduate limnology data assignments. If you want to see the datasets these modules are built on, they are public.
